"I feel that nature speaks, that the forest speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention. Grandfather Sky and Mother Earth are talking for those who listen. Why am I exploring nature? Well, it's simple. It's to be healed, to have my senses put together. The love of nature is a common language, and by spending more time exploring I understand everything better."
-Damien Vergez

Over one million Canadians enjoy mountain biking as a fun and exciting way to stay active and healthy. Being outside and riding bikes is an excellent way for students to experience nature-based learning, engage with the local land, and foster resiliency. Our session will include a classroom presentation on safety considerations, risk management, and trip planning. This will be followed by a field session in the CCHS soccer field on how to conduct a pre-ride skill assessment and how to teach 3 fundamental bike handling skills. After a short lunch, we will meet behind I.S.S. at the Blairmore Skills Park. Here we will practice on-trail leadership skills and group management. Finally, we will ride the Pass Powderkeg mountain bike trails to simulate leading a group of students on the trail.
Bring a well-tuned mountain bike, properly fitting helmet, sunglasses, gloves, a snack, lots of water, and a passion for sharing the love of nature.
